Redlands to Coachella, CA = 126km
Bike Team: "Zack's Angels" + George Vanderkuur the Friendly Giant
We left this morning at 7am. The day started off with some BRUTAL and steep climbs. However- we were rewarded afterwards with amazing tailwinds. We were able to cost at 50-55km/hour; I've never experienced anything like it! And it's awesome- because at Kaitlyn and my commissioning service, Pastor Dave had prayed we would get to experience strong tail winds.
We had to walk over a broken fence with our bikes and onto an abandoned freeway- it was filled with kilometers of thick cracks and potholes. A true MIRACLE I did not get a flat. But unfortunately, 22 cyclists did today. The heat was absolutely extreme and our energy was fading fast. Each time we filled our water bottles with ice water- it turned hot within ten minutes. I developed heat rash all over my face and legs. At each rest stop that Sea to Sea has set up for us we are provided with coolers of ice to dump down our jerseys, put ice towels over our heads, and lots of fresh cut up fruit.
We arrived at our destination, a school, at 3pm. We jumped straight into the pool to drop the temperature of our overheated bodies.
Supper was at 6:00- lasagne, salad, garlic bread and pizza. We had a peloton meeting and set up our sleeping bags in a gym. However most ppl opted to sleep in the open field outside- without a tent, to try and get a cooler rest.

Week 1/Day 1
Newport Beach to Redlands, CA = 112km
First off- EXCITING NEWS! Since the airport lost Karyn's bike- she quickly went out and bought a brand new one for $2,400.00. On Sunday we found out the airport finally found her bike and were shipping it directly to California PLUS paying for her new one!
Some young adults formed a little groupie - 4 girls plus Zack, so we named ourselves "Zack's Angels". The group included Zack, Karyn, Ava, Laura and myself. We were one of the last groups to leave Vanguard University (~8:15am) and it was raining. Most teams left around 7:30, but we were able to catch up to them quickly and so I'm feeling pretty confident in my pre-training of the tour. We flew through the first 20k, and eventually it stopped raining. Suddenly a biker whizzed passed us in the opposite lane shouting, "Biker injured!!" Ava sped up, since she's a doctor, and we came across 3 cyclists- one laying on the pavement. It was Mark- one of the recumbent cyclists- he had slid off the shoulder of the path and hit a fence. Ava took care of him until 9/11 came along. Found out later on that Mark had broken his foot and would not be able to complete the tour. We are praying for that family and Mark as he undergoes surgery.
We continued on with our bike ride. A church hosted all of us cyclists for a nice buffet of fruit and veggies (and coffee!). We reached our destination around 2pm. Set up our tents in a soccer field of a school and had showers. A group of us walked to CVS - I bought a lawn chairs. The store was 20 minutes away, but it felt good not to be biking haha. I don't have Wi-Fi access at the school and they have facebook blocked. For supper we had scalloped potatoes, bbq chicken, corn, broccoli salad, raw veggies and dip- delicious! We had a quick supper and went to bed early. Gotta get up at 5:45am tomorrow.

Starting!
I was able to spend my final days before the tour relaxing in Toronto with Angela. The past month has flown by so fast and it was nice to just enjoy some quality time with a quality friend :)
"No matter what your age or your situation, your dreams are achievable. whether you're 5 or 105, you have a lifetime ahead of you".
I also got to spend time with my beautiful friend Tanisha before taking off for the tour; she gave me some thoughtful presents- including a book of quotes and inspirations. It's amazing how much strength you can receive by the love of your friends- I feel so empowered!!
Everything on my flight to California went fairly smoothly- some obstacles here and there, but I eventually made it to the Vanguard University campus safe and sound and with my bike in tow! I met up with some other Canadian young adults right away and we chatted for a while before hitting up our dorm rooms for much needed rest.
June 22, Saturday
Had a delicious breakfast in the cafeteria and found out I was sitting beside Pastor John from the Williamsburg CRC (my Kooistra relatives church). Did some unpacking and assembled my bike with some much needed help from Bill Den Harder and Terry Barnes. I was pretty happy with the finished result.
Seems to be mostly Canadians here so far, which is nice. We can freely talk in km's and Celsius. When Karyn arrived from Saskatchewan, she found out her bike did not make the flight after her connection in Denver. The poor girl had to buy a new bike today!
A small group of 9 Canadians naturally formed after lunch and we decided to bike to Huntington Beach to see the pier. All together we rode a total distance of 28kms, and didn't push ourselves to go too fast. We did fairly well riding together, considering we were a variety of ages and riding abilities- and riding together for the first time. It was a blast! I got a chance to talk to Pastor Jake Kuipers for a while.
After supper we had an orientation and a bicycle safety course. Now some internet time, and bed. Looking forward to tomorrow!!

Commissioning Service
June 16
Our church had a commissioning service for Kaitlyn and I. It was so special to have the church come together in prayer of protection for the two of us. Our community has been so involved in the whole journey so far and we have both reached our individual goals of $10,000!! It turned out that the Van Der Velde family was also able to attend our commissioning service all the way from the Netherlands! Lisanne said her small group in Holland has even been praying for Kaitlyn and I to be able to reach our fundraising goals. We are so blessed.

Sea to Sea Fundraiser
On June 1, our church (Fellowship CRC in Brighton, ON) held a fundraiser for Kaitlyn Kuipers and I. We were overwhelmed with gratitude by all of the donations that kept pouring in and all of the people willing to help us unpack, set up, and organize everything. We also had a very successful table of baked goods and a barbecue. Overall we raised $3,176.85!! Thank you so much who made this day possible.

One Month to Go!
One Month to Go!
Booked my flight to California last night! I am so excited!! It cost 430$ (one-way) and the flight is about 7.5 hours. I'm a little nervous to be arriving alone, but fortunately through technology I've been chatting with some other people on the tour and hopefully will be able to meet up with them as soon as I arrive!
May long-weekend my mom booked a campsite at Sandbanks Provincial Park, but I got called into work at Bayfield. I figure I should be working over-time since I'll be camping all summer! I had Sunday off though so I went for a nice 100km bike ride by myself. Biking through Prince Edward County is always beautiful- lots of green grass, lakes, trees, vineyards, etc. But a lot of the long country roads do not have a paved shoulder- proving to be dangerous with a lot of traffic. Drivers are used to cyclists, and are typically polite- and give me plenty of room on the road. But occassionally I'll get someone who nearly clips me or honks angrily as they go by.
Met up with mom and Lawrence 3/4 through my bike ride for some homemade goodness at Slickers Ice Cream in Bloomfield! Nothing tastes better after biking for hours on a hot and sunny afternoon :)
Going through Wellington, 200-300 motorcycles passed by me all giving a peace sign. I was confused as to whether I was supposed to return the sign? I found out later it's a hand signal they give each other to indicate they're going in a single line to give me more room on the road.
I'm also training for my first half-marathon in June! On Friday I ran 20kms, and was happy to realize after my body reached a certain point it went on auto-pilot and it felt like my feet were running for me- like I was on auto-pilot. I think that will happen quite a bit this summer haha. My body will get into a routine of biking and go onto auto-pilot.
